Errors Prove Costly for Nighthawks
The Newbury College baseball team was swept by Emerson College Tuesday afternoon, 5-1 and 10-4 at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, FL. Lions starter Levine struck out 11 Nighthawks to earn his second victory of the season in game one while left fielder Maltzan went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in the second game.
Emerson scored four unanswered runs until the Nighthawks got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Newbury starter Christopher Ninteau hit Vennochi with one out but got Garcia to ground into the fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning. The following batter Maltzan doubled, sending Garcia to third and two batters later Speakman drove both of them in with a base hit of his own.
The Lions would go on to score two more runs before the Nighthawks broke up the shut-out. Sophomore Patrick Curry hit a one out double while fellow sophomore Alex Chetelat was awarded first base after being hit by the pitch. After fanning sophomore Michael Dean, Levine lost sophomore Joseph Herer to load the bases. Curry would come in to score the Nighthawks lone run of the game on Levine’s error in the inning.
In the second game, Newbury jumped out in front early. Dean led off the second inning with a walk but Kyle Schiavone grounded into the fielder’s choice for the first out of the inning. Freshman Michael Marcelynas followed up with a single as Shiavone advanced to second. He would score moments later as freshman Joseph Guidi singled to produce the Nighthawks’ first run of the game. Marcelynas also scored on the play as Guidi stayed in the run-down long enough for Marcelynas to cross the plate.
The Lions would not be denied, however, as they cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second and tied up the contest in the third. Emerson broke the game wide open in the fifth as they put up six runs due to two errors on the part of the Nighthawks. Lions starter Karl went the distance for Emerson, giving up four runs on nine hits while fanning five opposing batters.
With the two losses, the Nighthawks are still searching for their first victory of the season as they fall to 0-4 on the season.
