Hawks Sweep Past Newbury

Worcester, Mass.- Becker College swept their baseball double header against Newbury College by scores of 3-2 and 9-3.

In game one it took extra innings for the Hawks to prevail over Newbury. The Nighthawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on aMichael Dean (Wethersfield, Conn.) RBI single.

The score remained the 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Keith Kandel (Fresno, Calif.) got the inning started with a one out single.Joe Corey (Billerica, Mass.) then earned a walk, pushing Kandel to second base. After Zach Griesche (Niskayuna, NY) unleashed a wild pitch allowing Kandel to move to third, Austin Phillips (Thomson, GA.) hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield, scoring Kandel from third.

Newbury regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Matthew Clawson (Tolland, Conn.) hit a two out RBI double down the leftfield line, scoring Kyle Schiavone ((Wethersfield, Conn.) with the go ahead run.

With Becker trailing 2-1, Weston Meehan (Thomson, GA.) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a homerun to deep right centerfield, sending the game into extra innings. After Becker held the Nighthawks scoreless in the top of the eighth inning, the Hawks won it bottom of the inning on an errant throw over the first baseman’s head.

Errik Maddern (West Haven, Conn.) improved his record to 2-3 , after going all eight innings allowing two earned runs on six hits. Zach Griesche was the tough luck loser after going eight innings, allowing two earned on eight hits.

In game two Becker pounded out 12 hits on their way to their ninth win of the season. The Thomson Georgia combo of Austin Phillips and Weston Meehan combined for five of the Hawks RBI’s.  Patrick Curry (Hampstead, NH.) carried Newbury on offense going two for four with two RBI’s.

Fresham lefty Joe Franchi (Millbury, Mass.) went the distance for Becker, allowing two earned runs on six hits. With the win Becker improves to 9-11 overall and 5-3 in the NECC. Christopher Ninteau (Lisbon, Conn.) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 12 hits. The Nighthawks are now 4-18 overall and 2-6 in the NECC.
