Newbury Baseball Competes at Disney

Spring has arrived. The Newbury College baseball and softball teams return from spring break in Orlando, Fl where they tuned-up for their inaugural 2009 New England Collegiate Conference season.

Although young, Newbury baseball's future looks bright as they kicked off the 2009 season in Florida. Three newcomers to the Nighthawks squad contributed greatly in the team's seven games in the Sunshine State. Catcher and first baseman Patrick Curry (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) led the Nighthawks in six spring break games with a .526 average (10-19), including three doubles, a triple and team-high 15 total bases. Fellow freshman Alex Chetelat (Farmington, CT/Farmington) followed his classmate's performance with a .409 average (9-22), two doubles and 11 total bases. Freshman pitcher Jorge Pimentel (Winsted, CT/The Gilbert School) pitched one of two complete games in a victory against Drew University, 5-4 and finished the week with a 3.27 ERA and an opponent's batting average of .238. 

Baseball faces Rhode Island College on Sunday March 22 before their first home game on Saturday March 28 against Southern Vermont College. Softball will open up at home this Saturday (3/21) against St. Joseph's College at 12:00 pm and will begin conference play a week later with afternoon games against Mitchell College (3/28) and Lesley University (4/2).
