Lions Tame Nighthawks
The Newbury College baseball team was defeated by a much improved Emerson College program by the score of 13-5 in non conference action today in Easton, MA improving their record to 7-6 (2-0 GNAC). Freshman pitcher Zak Levine (Beverly, MA/Beverly) notched his first win of career with an impressive outing, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits in seven innings, while striking out eight Nighthawk batters. The Lions were led by a trio of offensive stars on the day; Peter Karl (Wallingford, CT/Lyman Hall), Brian Kitson (Londonderry, NH/Bishop Guertin) and Peter Hall (North Canton, OH/Hoover) did most of the offensive damage. Karl was 3-6 with 3 RBI, Kitson scored 2 runs on 2 hits, and Hall knocked in 5 RBIs and scored two runs.
The Nighthawks wasted a solid pitching effort by freshman Shawon Cave (El Mirage, AZ/Dystart). Cave pitched 5 stong innings allowing only 2 eared runs, but his effort was hampered by defensive lapses, especially in the third inning when 6 runs were scored by the victors, 5 of them unearned. The young scrappy Nighthawks, continued to battle throughout, and made some noise late in the game putting together some keys hits and scoring 4 runs in the 8th inning. Mike Dean (Wethersfield, CT/ Wethersfield) had a key base hit, knocking in two runs in the inning, while seniors Evan Hudson (Sunapee, NH/Sunapee) and Billy Maddock (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) continued to lead by example, pacing the offensive attack with 2 hits a piece.
The young Newbury team drops to 1-13 (0-2 NECC), and will travel to Daniel Webster College on Saturday for a key New England Collegiate Conference double header; start time is 12:00.
