Nighthawk Baseball Receives National Recognition
Maddock, Hudson, Adams, and Sullivan all named to All-Independent Team
The Newbury College Baseball program added some national honors to its resume for the 2008 season. Three players were honored by the Association of Division III Independents as members of the All Independent Team. Billy Maddock (Marshfield, MA) was named to the second team as an outfielder, while junior designated hitter Evan Hudson (Sunapee, NH) and freshman pitcher Justin Adams (East Providence, RI) were each named to the third team. The Nighthawks concluded just its second season as a NCAA Division III program with a 5-24 record, including the program's first-ever win on April 13th, a 10-9 decision against St. Joseph's College of New York.
Maddock led the Nighthawks in most offensive categories - batting average (383), at bats (94), runs (28), hits (36), triples (4), total bases (51), slugging percentage (.543) and stolen bases (9). The sophomore centerfielder also recorded a 1-3 record on the mound earning the first win in school history, and also scored the game-winning run in that milestone victory.
Hudson, a junior outfielder, was named to the All-Independent team for the second consecutive year. He posted a .360 batting average and starting in every game for the Nighthawks. He was second on the team in RBI and stole seven bases without being caught. Hudson also posted a 1-4 record on the mound and recorded his first collegiate win on April 26th against Becker College.
Adams, a freshman pitcher/outfielder, was named to the third team as a pitcher. Adams posted a 3-4 record and came within one out of a no-hitter in recording his first career win in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph's College (NY) on April 13th. Adams made 10 appearances for the Nighthawks, starting seven games. Adams also hit .262 and led the team in doubles (5) as well as RBI (25).
Greg Sullivan, in his second season as head coach of the Nighthawks, was named Co-Coach-of-the-Year. Sullivan shared honors with Chapman University (CA) head coach Tom Tereschuk. Sullivan will spend the summer in his second season as an assistant coach of the Manchester (CT) Silkworms of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
"These are all tremendous honors for our program, and I am very proud of all three of the players named to the All-Independent team. I am even more encouraged by the direction the program is headed in. We are building a foundation for a program that will soon be able to compete within the very competitive New England region."
