First Years Lead Newbury to Outstanding Week
The Class of 2015 has come in and made an immediate impact for Newbury College athletics. Out of the 13 student-athletes who have garnered New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) weekly honors, eight of them have been freshmen. Women’s volleyball middle blocker Sydney Fish (Kalamazoo, Mich.) received the honors for the third time this season while it was the first for women’s soccer’s Kelsey Landry (Milford, N.H.) and men’s soccer’s Rodriquez Pierre (Somerville, Mass.).
Fish helped the Newbury to their first victory, in four years, over Daniel Webster College, tallying nine kills in a 3-0 sweep of the Eagles on Wednesday October 19th. Daniel Webster had won the last five meetings which included knocking the Nighthawks out of the championship and semifinals the past two seasons. Fish closed out the week registering 15 kills and two total blocks in a tri-match against Framingham State University and Western New England University.
Landry became the third first year on the women’s soccer team to garner Rookie of the Week honors tallying nine points against Daniel Webster and Southern Vermont. After recording the first and last goals in an 8-0 shut-out of the Eagles, she finished off the week adding another two goals in a 6-1 victory over the Mountaineers. Landry continues to play well in her first season at Newbury registering two goals the Nighthawks’ fourth shut-out of the season – tying a program season-high – defeating non-conference Anna Maria College, 10-0, Monday afternoon.
Pierre became Newbury’s eighth freshman to receive Rookie of the Week honors in 2011-12 after helping the men’s soccer team to a 1-1-1 week. The Somerville High graduate combined for four assists over the weekend against NECC opponent Southern Vermont College and non-conference Fisher College. Pierre’s two assists against the conference leader, Southern Vermont, helped the Nighthawks 3-3 tie in a physical contest.
